This extraordinary landscape, which has been created by human over the centuries, is not outstanding just because of its nature – it is a true zoological garden in the wild: it has been a natural surrounding for various species, such as brown bears, wolves, jackals, deer, wild boars.

Where else in Europe is there a capital that offers something like this?

On the outskirts of the city, where you can immerse yourself into nature by bike, a new world begins. One can experience all of its beauty riding through it on a bike. Do you know that the oldest wheel in the world with an axle, was found in the Ljubljana Marshes? It is more than 5000 years old and claimed to be one of the oldest wooden items found in Europe and in the world.

Even though the wetland has been inhabited ever since, it remains as if it does not belong to this world or time.

This magical landscape covers an area of 160 km2, 135 km2 of which is protected as a natural park.

Our tour describes the wandering through the urban part of the Ljubljana Marshes, the entering into the wilderness, riding in the vicinity and alongside the river Ljubljanica, which gives gives a special touch to the city centre of our capital Ljubljana. The river also leads us alongside many archaeological sites. The view on the distant mountains lures us to take another tour in the future. Just before closing the circle we are gently led back into civilisation.

The Ljubljana Marshes is a fairy tale on the outskirts of the city – nevertheless, one should never forget that we are just guests whenever we enter and gently move through it, without any noise and as collectors of green memories.
